Week 5 Public Service Announcement
By Jennifer Anaya, Jackie Magness, Vicky Creasy, and Cindy Hernandez

The process of creating this PSA basically began by using the wiki to decide on a topic. We all put our ideas out there, then through the wiki, decided on a topic. Once we had our topic, we began writing out our Project Proposal with every member of our team contributing to the script in a different color. Once everyone contributed to the proposal, we moved on to phase II- production. Vicky Creasy shot all the video from Louisiana, then put a rough edit together and posted that to You Tube. We used Tooble to download what she had created and Jackie, Cindy, and I then got together to edit the video using iMovie. We then sent our revisions back to Vicky and she reshot the scenes that needed revision. Then we downloaded the new shots from You Tube, and Jackie and I edited the scenes, adding fast and slow motion using her Adobe program then we brought those edited scenes back into iMovie and I added the sound, and created the music in Garageband. Then we added the narrations that Cindy taped in Audacity. Once the sound was added, we added transitions, titles, and the Creative Commons information. Then during post-production, everyone watched the video and offered more editing suggestions. We decided Cindy needed to rerecord one narration that was too soft. Then we posted the final to You Tube and invited other members of our class to watch it.

Working online with a group of peers has been challenging, but most of all rewarding as the entire group has learned to work collaboratively through the pre- production, production, and post- production process. I was really satisfied with the outcome of the video, but felt we could have made it even better. I felt we could have added some better shots of Sullivan running out to the car. I had to crop the shots that we had due to doors and light fixtures showing in the background, and I felt they were a bit grainy. I also feel that the establishing shot at the beginning should have shown Sullivan’s house, and should have been less shaky. I also feel that we should have backed up the PSA with statistics establishing why it is important to use a booster seat up to age 8.

It was so satisfying working through this process. I can now see how this could be done with a group of students. I am looking forward to trying out some of these strategies with a class of my own.
